On June 24, 2020, Chris Bergin and Martin Kobus lost their beautiful, loving, intelligent son Sebastian. He was 17 years old, had just graduated from high school. He took his own life.

His parents would say that, in his lifetime, he struggled with self respect, socialization and mental illness.

To anyone who met him, they were greeted with open arms and a full heart. To meet him you would only see a bright, handsome, and engaging, interested young man. You would never know that deep down his struggles were complicated and troubling in ways we could not reach.

Over his lifetime, his parents did everything they could to help him try to find a path that would lead him to a brighter road, a way forward. But sadly, in the end the only path that he could see was suicide.

Mental health for teens, in the world of iPhones, social media, online gaming, a global pandemic, is the most challenging of roads to travel today. The isolation and non physical interaction of youth plays a huge part in their mental growth and stability.

We must find a way to help our young people navigate this new world.

Many, many youth are struggling with these issues and it is up to parents, educators, mentors, tutors and organizations to come up with ways to support them in order to prevent what happened to this wonderful family.

We are honored to partner with Chris & Martin in creating this legacy scholarship, created in Sebastian’s name, in hopes of helping other families in similar situations.

Every dollar donated to this legacy scholarship will be given directly to individuals and families experiencing the struggle of suicide, whether it’s in helping someone walking through thoughts of suicide or whether it’s in supporting a family who has experienced suicide and lost someone.
